Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

The Health Care FSA is a reimbursement account (for you and your eligible dependents) that allows you to use pretax dollars for out-of-pocket medical, dental and vision expenses. Eligible expenses include deductibles,  coinsurance and copayments. Our FSAs are administered by Trion.

  • You do not have to participate in Palmetto Health’s medical, dental or vision plans to participate. However, you cannot participate if you are enrolled in the Palmetto Health HSA plan. (See Limited Purpose FSA below.)
  • Your election is deducted from your paycheck in equal amounts.
  • Election changes can be made only for a qualifying event such as marriage, divorce, birth, adoption and death within 30 days of the event.
  • The maximum plan year contribution is $2,600*.
  • For your 2018 FSA, you can be reimbursed for claims incurred between January 1, 2018 and March 15, 2019.
  • All claims must be filed by March 31, 2019.
  • IMPORTANT--“Use It or Lose It” rule: Unused balances do not rollover from year to year.
  • Money in the Health Care FSA cannot be transferred to the Dependent Care FSA or vice versa.
  • Get reimbursed by submitting a paper claim or using your Benny™ Debit Card.

* The maximum FSA contribution for 2018 is expected to stay at $2,600 when final IRS regulations for the year are announced.

Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

If you are enrolled in a high-deductible health plan, such as the Palmetto HSA medical plan, and you are eligible for a Health Savings Account, you can only contribute to a Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Account, which can only be used for eligible dental and vision expenses only and preventive services.

  • For both the Health Care FSA and Limited Purpose FSA, over-the-counter drugs without a prescription are not reimbursable, except for insulin. Reimbursement only is available by using a paper claim with your receipts.

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

The Dependent Care FSA will provide reimbursement for day care or after-school care for children under age 13 or care for a dependent parent incapable of self-care (provided the employee claims the parent as a tax deduction).

  • Your election is deducted from your paycheck in equal amounts.
  • Election changes can be made only for a qualifying event such as marriage, divorce, birth, adoption and death within 30 days of the event.
  • The maximum plan year contribution is $5,000.
  • “Use It or Lose It” rule: Unused balances do not rollover from year to year.
  • Dependent Care Affidavit – automatic weekly reimbursement or submit a paper claim.
  • For the 2018 Dependent Care FSA, you can be reimbursed for expenses incurred between January 1, 2018 and March 15, 2019.
  • All claims must be filed by March 31, 2019.
